Description:
Home of Mary Dillard, 520 Louisiana St. (1890s?) When Langston Hughes attended Pinckney School, Mary J. Dillard was his teacher. This is her residence, a few blocks east of the school. When Hughes returned to Lawrence for public readings in later years (1958, 1965), he probably stayed at her house (Armitage). The two maintained ties after he left Lawrence, including published correspondence. Area newspapers record Hughes's visits to friends and relatives in Lawrence throughout the rest of his life (see Appendix 3). After teaching at Pinckney School, Dillard went on to become principal of Lincoln School.
