Description:
Bowersock Opera House, now known as Liberty Hall, 642 Massachusetts St. (1912) This plaque on the corner of Seventh St. and Massachusetts St. recapitulates the history of this site. The Herald of Freedom, funded by the Massachusetts Emigrant Aid Co., was published from 1854 to 1859. The office at this site was destroyed in Sheriff Jones's sack of Lawrence in 1856. Liberty Hall Opera House, the next building, welcomed Oscar Wilde and other 19th century notables. After a fire destroyed the original building in 1911, J.D. Bowersock built this structure for theatrical and musical entertainment. It is still in use for both live acts and films.
