Description:
Priscilla Gray marker, section 9 of Oak Hill Cemetery The gravestone of African American Priscilla Gray is handmade with embedded seashells. According to Cathy Ambler, Shells connect American blacks to African traditions where shells signify immortality (Historic Cemeteries). Though not a direct relative of the Langstons, the Gray family would have been part of the community at the time.
